German police have arrested a former Nazi officer accused of being involved in the war time deaths of at least 70,000 people. The 78-year-old suspect was not immediately identified. Officials say he was arrested at his home in southern Germany on Tuesday. Prosecutors say the low-ranking former secret police officer has admitted personally killing 500 people over two days back in 1943. They think he was involved in the killing of tens of thousands of people, most of them Jews in Poland and Ukraine during the war.

People who don't eat enough foods that are rich in Vitamin B6 maybe putting themselves at an increased risk of developing coronary artery disease. That's the suggestion of a new study that appears in this week's American Heart Association Journal Circulation. VOA's Jessica Bermon reports.
“The study carried out at 19 centers in 9 European countries measured Vitamin B6 levels in 750 heart disease patients and an equal number of healthy people. Investigators led by cardiologist Kelin Robinson of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio found low B6 levels in 20% of the participants. And those with low levels of the nutrient were nearly two times as likely to suffer heart disease or stroke than those with normal levels. A Chinese enterprise has been fined more than 1.68 million yuan, or 210 thousand US dollars, for discharging industrial wastewater into a local lake.
The Guizhou Fertilizer plant in southwest China was found guilty of causing the sudden death of more than two million kilograms of fish in the nearby lake Hongfeng. Investigators say the death of the fish was due primarily to the plant's industrial wastewater discharge.
Five local fish breeders had brought the lawsuit against the fertilizer plant.

China's draft resolution on human rights has won majority support at the ongoing 96th Inter-Parliamentary conference in Beijing, and become the basis of a conference resolution.
Delegates to the conference reached a consensus on the need to guarantee an individual's human rights, including free access to food. The draft, as presented by the Chinese delegation, includes a comprehensive statement on these issues.
The parliamentarians, representing 21 countries, agree that the human rights, especially the rights of women and children.
The draft calls on all countries to strengthen mutual understanding through dialogue, and to settle differences over human rights through peaceful negotiations.

30. FM: Sino-US Co-operation Vital to World Peace

Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said yesterday that China and the United States are committed to developing a “constructive and co-operative relationship,” which is essential to global peace, stability and security.
President Jiang Zemin and US President George W.Bush agreed to advance relations in their two meetings – one in Shanghai last October and the other in Beijing last month.
Tang made the remarks at a press conference yesterday at the Fifth Session of the Ninth National People's Congress.
“I want to emphasize that Taiwan question remains the most sensitive and most important core issue in Sino-US relations,” he said.
Since US President Richard M. Nixon, all US presidents have made serious commitments to adopt the one-China policy and observe the three China- US joint communiques. President Bush also made such commitments during his two visits to China, Tang said.
He urged the United States to “match its words with deeds” by abiding by the commitment it made.
Tang said the upcoming visits to the United States by Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Vice-President Hu Jintao this year will offer an opportunity to further improve and develop Sino-US relations.
He expressed China's willingness to work with the United States to narrow differences, expand common ground, increase bilateral exchange and promote co-operation.
The Taiwan question can be handled appropriately so long as the US keeps its commitments and observes the three Sino-US joint communiques.
Tang again expressed China's opposition to the United States' ‘Taiwan Relations Act.'
“The ‘Taiwan Relations Act' is only a document of the United States, and China has opposed it from the very beginning,” he said.
Tang said he hopes to push a constructive and co- operative (Sino-US) relationship” adding that ‘constructive' means the two countries have common views and interests in addition to differences, and that such co-operation should not be temporary or simply issue- based.
The two countries should continue long-term co-operation by treating each other with sincerity and maintaining common ground while shelving differences.
Turning to the increasing US military presence in Asia, Tang said that a new concept of security has recently appeared in Asia, the core of which is security through mutual trust and development through co-operation.
Stressing that the new concept of security represents the direction of international relations, Tang hopes that US Asian security policy will conform to the needs of Asian peoples and adapt to on- going changes in the region.
